The history of acoustic Guitar-2
Ancestors in Guitar history:
The lute -It was a instrument with a curved back and came in variety of shapes and sizes, and had either 4 or 5 courses and was either strummed with a quill feather. It was a popular instrument for hundreds of years and was passed on from Egyptians to the Greek, then to the Romans who introduced it throughout the Europe.
The Oud:When Moors invaded the southern spain in 711AD they brought the oud along with them.I t shared common ancestry with the string instruments of Europe and like oud has a rounded body but unlike oud lacks frets and had a smaller neck.
Getting closer:By the end of Renaissance, the lute had evolved and frequently had 20 to 30 strings, but it was slowly falling out of favour. In spain, fretted instruments with similar silhouette of the modern 'Guitar'started appearing around the 15th and 16th century.
The first modern guitar in history:
By the early 19th century, guitars looked very close to the six stringed instruments of today but were smaller in size.In the mid 1800s,Antonio de Torres Jurado, Spanish musician began creating the style of guitar that would give rise to all modern Guitars.
The modern Acoustic Guitar was borned:
Even today, almost two centuries after its invention the guitar still continues to be the most popular musical instrument. The flat top Guitar was developed by Christian Fredrick Martin,a German born American luthier who made his first Guitar in the United States in the 1830s. Martin created an X- braced guitar body which was able to handle extra stress produced by modern steel strings, which created too much tension for Torres style fan- braced Spanish Guitars.
THE tight steel strings also resulted in different style of playing that made use of a pick. This fundamentally changed the type of music that could be created on steel stringed instruments, and the precise and delicate melodies of the classical Guitar were replaced by brighter, chord driven music of the flat top acoustic guitar. The common use of a pick led to the development of a pick guard located somewhere below the sound hole on most models of flat top Guitars.
